Postal Playlist No. 1: Return to Sender & Please Mr. Postman

Let’s start this musical mail journey off with a bang—or rather, with a pelvis shake and a Motown groove.

If I’m going to launch Postal Playlist with intention (and a little swoon), there’s really only one man for the job: Elvis Presley. I’ve been head-over-heels for Elvis since I was a kid. His voice, his swagger, that signature lip curl—he had it all. I watched his movies on repeat, soaked up every note, and yes, I shamelessly crushed on his chemistry with Ann-Margret like it was my full-time job.

So, it’s no surprise that “Return to Sender” tops the list for this inaugural post. It’s playful, catchy, and has that irresistible vintage charm that only Elvis could deliver. And let’s be honest—there’s something oddly relatable about sending out your heart only to have it bounced back “no such number, no such zone.”

Oh, and fun fact? My love for the King runs so deep that my husband and I honeymooned at Graceland. 💍🎸

Well, we didn’t literally spend our honeymoon sleeping there, but we did take a tour of the rock n’ roll king’s beloved domain.

But one Elvis song just isn’t enough for this first installment. Next up is a track that always gets me dancing in my seat—“Please Mr. Postman” by The Marvelettes.

This Motown hit first dropped in 1961 and became the very first No. 1 pop single for Motown Records. Let that sink in—before The Supremes, before Marvin Gaye, before the Jackson 5—there were The Marvelettes. The group was made up of five high school students from Inkster, Michigan, who wowed a Motown audition panel with a song called “Please Mr. Postman,” a tune inspired by the universal agony of waiting for a letter from a loved one. (Haven’t we all been there?)

It’s soulful, it’s sweet, and it perfectly captures the hopeful ache that comes with peeking into your mailbox day after day. The Beatles later covered it. So did the Carpenters. But for me? The Marvelettes’ original version will always be the one.

🎶 You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute… Mr. Postman!

This is just the beginning, my friend.

I’ll be curating songs from every genre and every era—from golden oldies to indie gems, country ballads to punk rock anthems, and even a few unexpected surprises along the way. If it sings about letters, mailboxes, post offices, or postal heartache, it’s got a stamp of approval from me.

Stay tuned—and keep your ears open and your mailbox ready.

    1. I love this! Elvis was my idol growing up and love both of those songs, what a treat! We so want to visit Graceland someday. We wanted to do it when we went to Nashville but just didn’t have the time to go then.
We want to do it when we do our road trip by the Mississippi river. I take it that you guys loved seeing it!

      • Yes, it was awesome. We also toured his private plane and his car museum. On the same trip, we also visited the Loretta Lynn Ranch which we thoroughly enjoyed. There are so many things to see in Tennessee, and we did a lot.
